ULTRASOUND-GUIDED DRY NEEDLING IN FORT LAUDERDALE, FL

Precision Treatment. Real-Time Imaging. Faster Relief.

Dry needling works best when the needle reaches exactly the right spot. With ultrasound-guided dry needling at Coast 2 Coast Sports Medicine, our physical therapists use real-time ultrasound imaging to see your muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves on screen while they treat. That means more precise treatment, more confidence for you, and a better shot at lasting relief.

It’s an advanced option for people with stubborn tendon and muscle problems, like a shoulder that’s hurt for months or tennis elbow that won’t go away, as well as for athletes who need to get back in the game.

What Is Ultrasound-Guided Dry Needling?

Ultrasound imaging uses high-frequency sound waves to show the inside of your body in real time. There’s no radiation, and it’s completely painless.

During ultrasound-guided dry needling, your therapist places the ultrasound probe over the treatment area and watches the screen as they guide a thin, sterile needle into the exact tissue that needs treatment. Instead of relying on touch alone, they can see:

– The specific muscle, tendon, or ligament being treated
– How deep the target tissue is
– Nearby nerves and blood vessels to steer around
– Areas of thickening, tearing, or irritation in the tissue

The result is a more accurate, more efficient treatment, especially for deeper or harder-to-reach areas.

Benefits of Ultrasound-Guided Dry Needling

  • Pinpoint accuracy: The needle reaches the exact tissue causing your pain.
  • Added safety: Seeing nearby nerves and vessels helps your therapist avoid them.
  • Better for deep or small targets: Ideal for tendons, deep hip and shoulder muscles, and other hard-to-reach spots.
  • See your own injury: You can watch the screen as your therapist explains what’s going on with your tissue.
  • Smarter treatment decisions: Imaging helps your therapist tailor your plan and track how the tissue responds over time.

This was my third time here and I returned for a reason. Kris has the best staff, they're very personable, and most importantly they're extremely detail oriented towards your needs. This time I had some tightness in my back and by the end of the session, it was gone. The machine they placed on it was top notch, and the work they did (cupping and massage) on my tight areas felt amazing. Confident in saying this was the best physical therapy session I've ever had.

Ultrasound-Guided vs. Traditional Dry Needling

Both treatments use the same thin, sterile needles, and both can be very effective. The difference is how the needle is guided.

Traditional Dry Needling

Relies on your therapist’s hands-on assessment and knowledge of anatomy. It works well for many common muscle knots and trigger points.

Ultrasound-Guided Dry Needling

Adds live imaging, so your therapist can see the target tissue on screen. It’s often the better choice for tendon problems, deeper structures, or pain that hasn’t improved with other treatments.
Your therapist will recommend the right approach for you after your evaluation.

What to Expect During Your Session

  1. Evaluation: Your therapist reviews your history, assesses how you move, and uses ultrasound to look at the painful area.
  2. Treatment: With the ultrasound probe in place, your therapist guides the needle to the target tissue. Most sessions take just a few minutes of needling.
  3. Follow-up care: Dry needling is usually combined with exercise, manual therapy, and other treatments as part of a complete physical therapy plan.

Most people feel little discomfort when the needle goes in. You may feel a brief muscle twitch or deep ache, and some mild soreness for a day or two afterward is normal.

Ultrasound-Guided Dry Needling FAQs

Does ultrasound-guided dry needling hurt?

Most patients feel very little when the needle is inserted. You might feel a quick twitch or a deep ache as the muscle or tendon responds. Mild soreness afterward is normal and usually fades within a day or two.

Is ultrasound-guided dry needling safe?

Yes. Dry needling is performed by our certified physical therapists using sterile, single-use needles. Real-time ultrasound adds another layer of safety by letting your therapist see nearby nerves and blood vessels.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on your condition. Some people notice improvement after the first session, while longer-standing tendon problems may need several sessions as part of a full treatment plan.

Is this the same as acupuncture?

No. Acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine. Dry needling is based on modern anatomy and targets specific muscles, tendons, and trigger points to relieve pain and restore movement.

Does insurance cover ultrasound-guided dry needling?

Coverage varies by plan. Call our office and we’ll check your benefits before your visit.
