What Is Dry Needling?
Dry needling is a treatment where a trained physical therapist inserts thin, sterile, single-use needles into trigger points. Trigger points are tight bands or “knots” in a muscle that can cause pain both where they are and in other parts of the body.
When the needle reaches a trigger point, the muscle often gives a quick twitch and then releases. This can:
- Relieve muscle pain and tension
- Reduce inflammation
- Stimulate blood flow to promote healing
- Restore range of motion
- Improve how your muscles work together
It’s called “dry” needling because nothing is injected. The needle itself does the work.

This was my third time here and I returned for a reason. Kris has the best staff, they're very personable, and most importantly they're extremely detail oriented towards your needs. This time I had some tightness in my back and by the end of the session, it was gone. The machine they placed on it was top notch, and the work they did (cupping and massage) on my tight areas felt amazing. Confident in saying this was the best physical therapy session I've ever had.Posted on Google![]()

Dry Needling vs. Acupuncture
They both use thin needles, but that’s where the similarity ends.
Acupuncture
Comes from traditional Chinese medicine and focuses on energy flow along meridians.
Dry needling
Based on modern anatomy and physical therapy. It targets specific muscles and trigger points that are causing your pain and limiting your movement, and it’s part of a complete physical therapy treatment plan.
What to Expect During a Dry Needling Session
1. Assessment: Your therapist finds the muscles and trigger points behind your pain.
2. Treatment: After cleaning the skin, your therapist inserts the needles. You may feel a brief twitch or a deep ache as the muscle releases. Needles may stay in for a few seconds or a few minutes.
3. Follow-up: Dry needling is usually combined with stretching, strengthening, and hands-on therapy so your results last.
After your session: Mild soreness for a day or two is normal, similar to a good workout. Staying hydrated and moving gently helps.
Need More Precision? Try Ultrasound-Guided Dry Needling
For tendon problems, deeper muscles, or pain that hasn’t improved, we also offer ultrasound-guided dry needling. Your therapist uses real-time ultrasound imaging to see exactly where the needle is going.

Dry Needling FAQs
Does dry needling hurt?
The needles are very thin, so most people barely feel them go in. When a trigger point releases you may feel a twitch or a brief deep ache. Most patients describe it as a “good hurt” followed by relief.
How quickly does dry needling work?
Many patients feel looser and notice less pain right after their first session. Longer-term problems usually need a few sessions combined with exercise.
Is dry needling safe?
Yes, when performed by a trained and certified provider. We use sterile, single-use needles and follow strict safety guidelines.
How often can I get dry needling?
Most patients have dry needling once or twice a week as part of their physical therapy plan. Your therapist will recommend what’s right for you.
Who should not get dry needling?
Let your therapist know if you are pregnant, take blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder, have a fear of needles, or have a weakened immune system. We’ll make sure the treatment is safe for you.
