IASTM & Graston Technique in Fort Lauderdale, FL

Break Up Restrictions. Reduce Pain. Move Freely.

Scar tissue and tight fascia can make your muscles feel stuck, stiff, and sore no matter how much you stretch. Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) at Coast 2 Coast Sports Medicine uses specially designed stainless steel tools to find and break up those restrictions so you can move without pain.

Our therapists are certified in the Graston Technique, one of the most widely used forms of IASTM.

What Is IASTM?

IASTM is a form of manual therapy where a physical therapist uses smooth, contoured stainless steel instruments to treat the muscles, tendons, and fascia (the connective tissue that surrounds your muscles).

The instruments let your therapist:

  • Detect areas of scar tissue, adhesions, and tightness, which the tool can “feel” more precisely than hands alone
  • Treat those areas by gliding the tool over the skin to break down restrictions
  • Stimulate healing by increasing blood flow to the area

Benefits of IASTM

  • Breaks down scar tissue and adhesions
  • Releases tight fascia
  • Reduces pain and inflammation
  • Improves flexibility and range of motion
  • Boosts circulation to speed healing
  • Often brings faster results than hands-on massage alone

Conditions IASTM Can Help

Tendon Problems

Tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, Achilles tendinopathy, patellar tendinopathy, and rotator cuff tendinopathy.

Foot & Leg Pain

Plantar fasciitis, IT band syndrome, shin splints, and calf tightness.

Back & Neck Pain

Muscle tightness and fascial restrictions in the neck, upper back, and low back.

Post-Surgery Scar Tissue

Scar tissue that limits motion after knee, shoulder, hip, or ankle surgery.

Chronic Muscle Tightness

Stiff, restricted muscles that don’t respond to stretching.

This was my third time here and I returned for a reason. Kris has the best staff, they're very personable, and most importantly they're extremely detail oriented towards your needs. This time I had some tightness in my back and by the end of the session, it was gone. The machine they placed on it was top notch, and the work they did (cupping and massage) on my tight areas felt amazing. Confident in saying this was the best physical therapy session I've ever had.

What to Expect During IASTM Treatment

  1. Assessment: Your therapist evaluates the painful area and how it affects your movement.
  2. Treatment: A light lotion is applied and your therapist glides the instrument over the area. You may feel a scraping or grainy sensation over restricted tissue. Treatment usually takes 5 to 10 minutes per area.
  3. Movement & Exercise: IASTM is followed by stretching and strengthening to lock in your new range of motion.

After treatment: Some redness or mild bruising in the treated area is normal and fades within a few days.

IASTM FAQs

Does IASTM hurt?

It can feel intense over tight or scarred areas, but your therapist adjusts the pressure to keep you comfortable. Most patients find it very tolerable.

What's the difference between IASTM and the Graston Technique?

IASTM is the general name for treatment with instruments. The Graston Technique is a specific, trademarked IASTM method with its own tools and training. Our therapists are Graston certified.

Will I bruise after IASTM?

Some patients have mild redness or light bruising, especially over areas with a lot of scar tissue. It’s normal and usually fades within a few days.

How many IASTM sessions will I need?

Many patients notice improvement within 3 to 5 sessions. Your therapist will build IASTM into your overall treatment plan.
